Another significant statement in the scriptures is about one stream of the Saraswati being named Sambramati. The latter is obviously river Sabarmati. It is also a fact that Gujarat is home to a large number of Saraswat Brahmins. These lines are clearly shown in the Sanskrit slokas given below. These slokas are given in the Skanda Purana, in the Nagar Khand. There is an event regarding the clash between two spiritual giants of the Puranic era, Rishi Vishwamitra and Brahm- Rishi Vashisht. The story goes as follows :
In the fury of his enemity for Vashisht,Vishwamitra asked the River Saraswati to get him Vashisht who had his ashram upstream along the banks of the river. Saraswati refused to do this upon which Vishwamitra became furious and cursed the waters of the river to become bloody. The curse manifested and soon the river’s banks became inhabited by Rakshasas who reveled in drinking the blood-laced waters. Saraswati was heart-broken and approached Sage Vashisht to neutralize the curse. The rishi agreed to redeem the divine river and did so after approaching the river as it emerged from the roots of the Plaksh tree.
